Characteristics of the HP Color LaserJet 5500n printer and its functions are readily evident after spending just a few minutes with it. It is a durable printer, and it seems to be meant mainly for workgroups of medium-to-large size, most of all. It also handles color print jobs using 5500n compatible toner quite well and does so with a number of nice features and with good print speed at a price that most any business will appreciate.

This particular Hewlett-Packard printer is able to print 21 pages per minute in both color and black-and-white with HP toner cartridge, which is a notable point in its favor, given that many printers are not as quick when dealing with color print jobs. From the second that it is tasked until the time the first page emerges is only 18 seconds. It has a cold start capability of about two minutes, meaning that it will take that long from the time it is first turned on until it is ready to go.

There is a 400 Hz processor installed in this printer, meaning that it will be able to handle even the largest of print tasks from multiple members in the workgroup with little trouble. With a 120,000 sheet per month printing capacity, it is also extremely durable printer and will need very little maintenance or upkeep, for the most part.

When it comes to print quality of a print job — whether in black and white or color — the Hewlett-Packard offers 600 dots per inch (dpi) resolution, which means all print jobs should be clean and sharp. It comes standard with two paper trays that can hold a total of 600 sheets, which can be expanded to four paper trays holding a total of 1600 sheets, as well.

The printer is also able to hold 20 envelopes, though it does not have a standard feeder attached. Still, it’s very easy to feed in envelopes whenever needed. The 5500n is one of the basic models in this particular series, though it does have an internal print server for a 10/100 Ethernet input port. There is no duplex print capability, which is available in other models in the series.

Standard internal memory capacity is a more-than-acceptable 96 MB, with the capability to be upgraded to a full 416 MB. There is also the capability of installing an optional 10 GB hard disk, though it is hard to conceive of any print job or storage need for one of these networked printers that would require that much capacity.

The 5500n can also accommodate most Windows operating systems, including NT. Additionally, it interfaces quite well with just about every Mac OS system, which isn’t always the case with a Hewlett-Packard printer. The machine itself weighs about 133 pounds, meaning it’s not easy to move around. There are four separate print cartridges; black, magenta, yellow and cyan. A one-year on-site service warranty is offered standard.

In all, the HP Color LaserJet 5500n printer is a complete package that features a great deal of durability and functionality for a price of about $1300 before discounts. It is made for medium-to-large networked workgroups and has the ability to print out over 21 pages per minute of both color and black-and-white product. In short, there is much to like and very little to dislike. When you run out of cartridge and toner, you don’t have to go into stores.
